Hatteras, NC Fishing Report from Stormy Petrel II
Summer 2009
I apologize for some omissions in this report. I did not get photos of all the catches. Many of the half day trips are missing as is one offshore trip. I would like to thank everyone who went fishing with us.
Sept. 16, 2009
Today was a bit windy, but we managed to scrap out a good catch of bottom fish down south.
Sept. 15, 2009
Today we had glassy calm seas and just a little current. Trolling was really slow for most of the fleet, so we opted for bottom fishing after dragging baits around for a while.
Sept. 6, 2009
Believe it or not, the triggerfish were not that easy to catch today, but we had some good anglers who had done it before. We caught the Wahoo between drifts and missed a few other bites.

Not much action trolling, but the bottom fishing was excellent.

Bottom fishing was not as good as we hoped, but trolling got us several Wahoo.
August 12 Make Up Trip, 2009
A tough day of fishing, but we scrapped out a catch. The bottom fish are mostly on stringers this time.

A nice combination catch: triggers and dolphin, with token snapper and bass.

Too much current for bottom fishing and a scrappy day of trolling.
July 22, 2009
Scrappy bottom fishing, but the we caught lots of Amberjacks on our jigs. The biggest one is actually an Almaco Jack. Almacos are stockier than Greater Amberjack and have longer, more falcate dorsal fins.
July 19, 2009
Today we went for Black Sea Bass, and there was not much else there on the bottom except for the pesky Rock Bass. Last summer there were more Gray Triggerfish and Vermillion Snapper in the same area.
July 18, 2009
A breezy day with current. The guys did well catching triggers, but there was too much wind and current by midday to do as well with the snappers and jacks, which they really wanted to catch.
We missed over a week of trips this July because we had to replace a transmission. The good news is we got a brand new transmission.
Friday July 3, 2009 Half Day
After reports of slow fishing near the beach, we headed out a few miles for bottom fishing. Plenty of fish, but most were not keepers. We did scrap out a few triggers for dinner and we caught a Barracuda on a live Sea Bass.
Thursday July 2, 2009 Half Day
We started off w/ good fishing on the soundside, where we caught Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. After the bite was over, we went to sea, where we found choppy conditions and mostly small bottom fish. We also caught a nice dolphin about six miles out.
Wednesday July 1, 2009 Half Day
None of us had enough patience to keep Spanish Mackerel fishing, so we went to sea and did some bottom fishing a few miles out. Plenty of bites, but few keepers. Pete hooked up a nice dolphin on the spinner to round out the catch.
June 30, 2009 Gulf Stream Make-Up
Dolphin fishing was spotty, at least within 20 miles of where we fished, so we decided to make a drift. No wind and little current made for fast and furious action. Mostly Triggerfish, but also some big Sea Bass. A while later the wind picked up and ruined our drift. After about two hours of trolling w/o a bite, we found some Dolphin and caught a Cobia on a trolled bait!
June 25, 2009 Gulf Stream Trip
Dolphin were scarce, but we caught some nice gaffers. Fortunately, bottom fishing was excellent. I had to grab this photo from the marina website. Sorry about the pixels.
June 21, 2009 Gulf Stream trip
Dolphin kept us busy for the first hour and a half of our fishing time. We did not go more than five or six minutes w/o a bite in this time. Than we filled the box with triggerfish. By 12:30 we trolled offshore looking for big game, and we caught a few more nice dolphin.

Day Two w/ Brian Degan's bachelor party crew. Dolphin were the target species today, and while the action was not steady, we did take advantage of some opportunities, and the fellows learned a bit about gaffing.
June 19, 2009 Gulf Stream trip
My old buddy Jamie Cameron brought up a crew for Brian Degan's bachelor party fishing blitz and we started out with some nice dolphin and good bottom fishing.
Some of the dolphin put on a good show.
Although we mostly caught triggerfish, Warren caught a whopper sea bass.

The Graham family came back to fish with us again today and had a big time.

Slow fishing, but we did catch a nice dolphin just off the beach.
